Hair Dryers Deliver Hot Air and Then Some

Of course, drying your hair naturally and without dryer is best. Then there is the morning rush. The hair dryer comes to our rescue and helps us get ready in time. Modern hair dryers are quite powerful. Yet, they are also amazingly gentle. Below, we help you use your hair dryer to your best advantage so that your hair will be at its best and you can show your personal style

Hot air from a hair dryer does tend to dry out your hair ever so slightly. It makes therefore sense to apply a protective coating to your hair before blow-drying it. You can do this by using mousse, a blow-dryer tonic or a special thermospray. Such styling aids coat each hair with a very thin film, thus protecting it from the damages caused by rough brushing and the drying effect of hot air.

A hair dryer with two or three heat settings, two or three blower settings and also an ambient air setting works best. Your hair dryer should have plenty of power. 1,600 to 2,000 Watts output will dry your hair in no time at all. This saves styling time. Use plenty of power and the medium heat setting of your hair dryer to almost finish drying your hair. Then you can proceed with styling.

A HAIR DRYER WITH AN AMBIENT AIR SETTING BELONGS IN EVERY STYLING KIT

Use a round brush to give medium long and long straight hair bounce and gorgeous shine. Use clips to gather the top layer of your hair on your head. Now you can pull the lower strands over a round brush with moderate force. If you like to create more base volume you can pull the lower hair strands over a round brush and treat it with a short stream of warm air followed by a burst of cold air. Then allow your hair to cool for a little while. You can speed up the process by using several round brushes. This works best when the brush handles are light and do not pull your hair down too much. Light-weight brushes will also better resist slipping out of the hair.

Flat paddle brushes are most suitable for shorter hair and bob cuts from very short to shoulder length. Slightly tilt your head to the side and apply some pressure while brushing the sides of your hair against the grain. Use your hair dryer on each strand at the same time. Then do the same for the back portion of your hair.

Very short pixie haircuts dazzle after some handiwork. Take individual strands and slightly pull them away from your scalp while using the blow dryer on this strand. This creates the trendy pixie look and gives the hair structure.

Take it easy with the hair dryer on wavy or curly hair.  A special diffuser attachment on your hair dryer ensures a gently stream of warm air without turning your curls into an unmanageable mess and without turning you into the shock-headed Peter of the fairy tale. A large round brush allows you to straighten wavy hair. Apply as much tension as is reasonable when pulling individual hair strands over the round brush. Pulling the strands first to the inside and then to the outside while using the hair dryer will make your hair fall straight in a particularly appealing way.

HOW TO PROPERLY BLOW-DRY YOUR HAIR

  • Tip 1: Keep at least 8 inches distance between the blow dryer and your hair. Never use the blow dryer closer to your hair.
  • Tip 2: Avoid using your hair dryer at higher temperature settings. Wet hair can be damaged even easier than dry hair. As a rule of thumb, when it feels too hot on your scalp then it is pure stress for your hair as well.
  • Tip 3: If you have fine delicate hair you should set the blower to a low setting. Otherwise, strands of your hair may form tangles and you could wind up with a head of unruly hair.
  • Tip 4: Set the blow-dryer to a lower heat setting than you would use on a head of thick hair.
  • Tip 5: Your investment in a high-quality hair dryer with several heat, blower and ambient air settings will pay dividend. In contrast, small travel hair dryers have only one or two settings and run hot quite easily. Travel blow dryers are therefore not suitable for daily use.
  • Tip 6: Brushes with metal or plastic bristles will damage your hair. Natural (boar) bristles are gentler on the hair. Wooden bristles are ideal for thick wavy hair.
  • Tip 7: Take good care of your brushes. Once a week, you should remove loose hair and every two months you should clean your hair utensils with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo.

Hair Dryers by Class

Modern hair dryers are far more sophisticated than they used to be with many high-tech features to benefit your hair. You find the following technologies in the new gadgets, which do more than blowing wind through your hair:

The power of ionization: Your blow dryer discharges negatively charged ions with the air stream. These negative ions attach and coat the positively charged hair. This prevents static and fly-away hair. In addition, this process attracts moisture particles from the air and keeps your hair from being blown too dry.

Ceramic Elements provide gentle infra-red heating. As a result, your hair dries ever so gently from the inside out.

Finishing Attachments: Ceramic attachments comb your hair while you blow-dry it. This makes your hair especially smooth and creates the marvellous lustre.

Colour Guards: A specially designed hair dryer attachment creates streams of cool air amid the warm blow-dryer air. This attachment is meant to prevent heat damage and the loss of colour from dyed hair.

Logic Blower: This special feature ensures a finely calibrated stream of evenly heated air.

Super Blowers: Hair dryers with this feature provide 50 % more effective air circulation. Add to this 2,500 Watt power output and your hair will be dry twice as fast.

STOP THE STATIC!

static-hair

Well it’s that time of year again, the warm smell of pumpkin spice in the air and the hustle and bustle of the holiday is coming, and of course dealing with STATIC HAIR. This time of the year the most common question we’re asked when our clients sit in my chair is:

How do I get rid of the static in my hair and what causes it?

This time of year, the air is extra dry and we also have the heat on in the house and in the car which pulls all the moisture out of the air. This dryness is the cause of static in the hair.

Here are a few tips to help calm down your ‘DO’.

  • MOISTURIZE – this is the time of year to maybe switch to a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. It’s also a good idea to stretch a little longer in-between washes.
  • HUMIDIFIER- not only is it good for sinus issues, but for your hair as well. Running a humidifier in your room helps replace the moisture that the heat is drying out of the air.
  • AIR DRY – if you are able to let your hair air dry, then style as needed. Once its dry it will lessen the static
  • COMB WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS- switch to a natural bristle brush, and rubber or metal combs during the winter months. Avoid plastic brushes or combs, they cause an electrical charge causing static. You can also spray an anti-static spray (same for use on clothes, or even hairspray) on your brush before brushing.
  • USE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS- Using an oil, pomade, mouse, or styling lotion in the hair will help knock down the static.
  • SPRAY BOTTLE- after styling if there is still some static, you can use a spritz of water to calm the hair back down.
  • HAIR SPRAY- always finish any style with hairspray to help stop the static.
  • DRYER SHEETS- yep that’s right! Regular old dryer sheets from the laundry room. You can use them to just glide along the hair. You can even keep some in your purse for later use.
  • SILK PILLOW CASE- using a silk pillow case will help continue to fight static from coming back while you’re sleeping.

We hope these tips help you knock out the static in your hair this winter. Remember the biggest contributor to static hair is LACK OF MOISTURE, so remember to MOISTURIZE – MOISTURIZE – MOISTURIZE!!

The Worst Things You’re Doing To Your Hair – STOP The Damage!

Using old styling tools

brushYou want to make sure to clean out those hairy brushes, which are breeding grounds for germs and old residue — things no one wants in  their hair.

Remove the hair from the brush after each styling session. Once a month, clean brushes and combs with a little baking soda and water, dissolving well, soaking for a couple of minutes, and rinsing thoroughly. The baking soda removes oils and products that can get stuck  in the bristles.

.Using a rough elastic

ponytailIt’s not 1995, but the scrunchie could be making a comeback. The best type  of elastic to use in your hair is something covered in fabric. A dense, thin hair tie can irritate your strands causing breakage if pulled to  tightly. If you just want to get your hair out of your face, try gently pulling it back using bobby pins or claws.

Anything too tight is damaging, so try to think loose.

.

.Setting the heat too high

Excess heat strips hair of its natural moisture, causing your cuticles to dry and snap off — leading to some thirsty-looking strands. That’s why we’re told not to turn the heat all the way up on our styling tools, but how  do you know how hot is too hot?

To start, don’t turn the dial above “medium.” We also suggest holding a blow dryer up to the back of your hand. If your skin feels comfortable, you’ve found a good setting.  If you have seriously stubborn hair and need to use extra heat, always make sure you’re using a heat protectant. And as rule of thumb, the less heat the better, so try to style your hair when it’s as dry as possible. Don’t blow dry when it’s dripping wet, instead wait until it’s damp.

.Skipping heat protectant

You’ve heard it over and over again, but for good reason. “Heat protectant spray is important to prevent damage to the hair shaft. It will help the shaft maintain moisture and prevent excess breakage by coating and moisturizing your strands.”

Try: GK Hair Leave In cream or spray, now sold at Salon Panache! Smooth or spritz it on damp or dry hair right before you begin heat styling with a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron. Make sure it coats each section that is going to be exposed to heat, but not so much that your hair is sopping wet again. A light spray will do the trick.

.Slathering on too many products

applying-mousseThe last things you want to do are cause build-up and strip your hair of  its natural oils. If you have fine hair, your locks will end up weighed  down, creating the opposite effect of what you’re trying to achieve.

On  natural hair, too many products can create dry strands by over-coating  the cuticle and preventing moisturizing serums from getting to the  center.

And while thicker hair takes to products a bit better, start  with less product than you think you need, building up if that amount  isn’t doing the trick. Every woman needs heat protectant, dry shampoo  for greasy days, and shine serum for frizzy days. If you want to use  additional products or are unsure if you’re putting too much in, try applying products to wet hands to thin them out a little — you can always add more.

.Keeping the same shampoo for changing hair

Shampooing___Most women seem to think that they need to routinely switch their  shampoo in order to keep locks from building up a tolerance to product. Not true, change your shampoo when hair circumstances  change, for example, if color or highlights have been added.

Many women tend to experience some type of hair loss while taking certain medications, or during pregnancy. When this happens, try switching to a shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair like Redken Intra Force.

Handling wet hair roughly

combing hairWhen hair is wet, cuticle scales can lift, making moist strands more  delicate and more susceptible to breakage and split ends than dry hair.  Make sure you always smooth damp hair with a wide-tooth comb. Using a brush or narrow-tooth comb can be too rough because it  pulls too harshly causing snaps and breakage. The same goes for  towel-drying, which can lead to ripping or breaking the strands if you  rub too hard.

Brushing from the roots down

brushinghairBrushing your locks from top to bottom can cause snags and breakage. To  go about it in a gentler way, divide your hair into three-to-four-inch  sections and smooth from the bottom up.

To do this, grab hair a few  inches from the bottom, and brush down from where your hand is. Move  your hand up a few inches and repeat the process until you get to the roots. This way, there’s not one long stroke from the top to the bottom,  but little baby strokes that are way gentler.

Going too long between haircuts

hair-cut

While picking split ends might be a great procrastinating tool, it’s also a wake-up call that you’re due for a trim. Over time, split ends tend to divide  into even bigger split ends, causing your hair to thin and weaken. To keep hair looking healthy and whole, have a 1/2-inch cut off your ends every  month, or every other month if you’re trying to grow hair long. Dead ends don’t add to your length anyway, so trimming them gives your hair a chance to reboot.

How to get fuller, longer hair NOW with HAIR EXTENSIONS

First and foremost, hair extensions enhance your look with longer and fuller hair. If you ever wondered what you would look like with longer and fuller hair, or simply want to change your look this is a great way.

If you have a hair-thinning problem due to various reasons, hair extensions are a great solution for you. By adding REAL hair to your own, you can have the fullness that you’ve been searching for.

Wearing real hair extensions is a great way to revamp your old hairstyle and look fabulous. It’s very easy to have and can stay on for a long time with proper maintenance.

Many famous Hollywood celebrities change their appearance week after week using hair extensions. So the next time you see your favorite actress or singer with gorgeous hair, you know the trade secret.

For those women who have been looking at hair extensions as a way to add extra length to their hair, and still want the hair to look as natural as possible, there is only one choice. The best way to achieve this look is to use human hair.

Although you can find a number of different types of synthetic hair extensions on the market, you are going to find that the majority of them never look as good as you would like them to. And you will never be able to heat treat them, such as with curling, or flat irons.

One of the greatest things about the human hair extensions is you will be able to treat the extensions in the same manner as you do your hair. This means that you can leave them on while you are showering and wash and condition them right along with your own hair. You can also use your curling iron to add style. And human hair extensions can be professionally color treated!

Hair is as much as a statement piece as a bag, shoe, or any other accessory. With that being said, if you’re going to invest in hair extensions, human hair is the right choice. Premium human hair that will stand the test of time over and over again.

Salon Panache uses only the highest quality Hair Extensions!

Fast Fixes for Beauty Barriers

Red Lipstick on your pearly whites

Fast Fix: Directly after applying lipstick, always press crimson-color lips onto a folded square of tissue to blot. Then stick your forefinger in your mouth and slowly pull it out to remove any lipstick that you may have mistakenly applied on the insides of your lips (this step is crucial).
Tip: Swipe a super-thin coat of Vaseline across your top row of teeth; it’s far too slick for lipstick to adhere.

Loose Eyeshadow fallout under your eyes

Fast Fix: When applying shadow, fold a single square of tissue and hold it underneath each eye. It will always catch any loose pigment fallout while protecting your freshly done foundation. This works wonders!

Clumpy Mascara

Fast Fix: First things first, throw away your mascara—it’s most likely expired. Second, gently clamp your lashes with a baby wipe between your forefinger and thumb, and pull lashes all the way through to remove any excess mascara. Then put a little Vaseline on your fingertips and lightly run them across the tips of your lashes to separate, darken, and define them. For a more dramatic look, use Mascara to darken your lashes natural color. Lightly swipe your top lash.

Way to much blush

Fast Fix: For powder blush, liberally dust loose translucent powder over your cheeks to diffuse the color. If you’re wearing cream blush, tone it down by sponging an ever-so-slight amount of Tinted Moisturizer on top.

Frizzy flyaways

Fast Fix: As silly as this may sound, if fighting the frizz is a daily plight, you might want to keep a box of dryer sheets under your bathroom sink as well as in the laundry room. Rubbing one over your hair drastically reduces humidity-related static cling, allowing fussy strands to fall right into place.
Professional Tip: Use Chi Silk Infusion for a more heavy duty defense. We all use it on our hair!

yellowish tint on your fingernails or toenails

Fast Fix: To restore your nail beds to your natural nude color, mix a few drops of fresh lemon juice with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide in a plastic bowl. Completely saturate a few cotton balls in the mixture and rub your fingernails and toenails until the stain is removed.
Tip: In the future, be sure to double up on your base coats!

Cranial Sacral Therapy-Massage by KAYE

Throughout my 25+ years of doing Cranial Sacral Therapy I have often been ask, “What is it?”, “Is it like a massage?”, “What’s it for?” , “What can I expect?”  “Can I wear clothes while getting a Cranial Sacral treatment?”

Briefly, I will try to give you some insight to the subtitles of CST (Cranial Sacral Therapy).  First and foremost CST works with your natural body rhythm. Permit me to quote from Dr. Wm. Sutherland.” At a deep level of our physiological functioning all healthy, living tissues subtly “breathe” with the motion of life – a phenomenon that produces rhythmic impulses which can be palpated by sensitive hands. “

The sensitive hands he is referring to are mine, and I am always amazed at the information I receive through the very gentle touch of CST. Following the body rhythm allows me to know where you have areas that are stuck due to stress and trauma throughout your life. Though I can not tell you the basis of your personal stress/trauma, I can define the areas that they have lodged themselves and assist in relieving most “stuck” spots. Oftentimes it isn’t  in the area where you might have been most concerned about. It’s always a surprise to me and I delight when I am able to sense such idiosyncrasies.

Let me get back to my opening questions previously posted:

  •  “What is it?”

It’s a therapy that is done on a massage table in a warm, quiet, darkened room designed for your relaxation.

  • “Is it like a massage?”

No, it is not remotely like a massage. No oils or lotions are applied to your skin nor is there pressure as you might experience during a massage.

  •  “What’s it for?”

The best answer I can give is that it is designed for complete body realignment, relaxation that allows your system to correct itself, and comfort to completely sooth through stress periods of life.

  •  “What can I expect?                                                                                                                       Expect to be surprised! I always am and delighted at the response I get after a client has received their treatment. Oftentimes they will relate the sensations that they felt going down their arms when I was “working” on their head. Honestly, I don’t pretend to totally understand how, when or where the body will release tension but I can guarantee it will happen.
  •  “Can I wear clothes during a CST treatment?

Most assuredly, in fact soft comfortable loose fitting shirts and pants/shorts offer the most successful treatment possible.

I hope this brief explanation will pique your interest in CST and be a solution to your health needs.
Please allow me to offer you a $10.00 DISCOUNT on your first CST treatment at Salon Panache. Mention this article when booking your appointment! I am available most Tuesdays and Wednesdays and on call for any other day that will meet your needs. However; appointments are necessary, so please call for a time that will be most convenient for you.

Thank you, Kaye

Vogue’s Guide to Fall 2012 Fashion

In many arenas these days, it’s—to borrow a phrase from Beyoncé—girls who run the world (and where they don’t, perhaps they should). So what more appropriate message to see on fall’s runways than that of empowerment, with the best designers in New York, London, Milan, and Paris offering strong, chic, individual women new ways of dressing. The mood is adult and polished, with major embellishment, geometric prints, rich color, and lots of wonderful statement coats (that sometimes aren’t coats at all, but dresses or the like). In fact the shows effectively captured the extremism, wit, color, and imaginative spirit that will be celebrated this spring and summer when the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art displays the work of Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli—two of fashion’s strongest women if ever there were.
